American Water Co – Indiana Progressive Design-Build

Muncie, Indiana

Project Description

The Phase 2 Improvements project involved a new chemical/ ultraviolet (UV) building including storage and feed equipment for 7 chemicals (including sodium hypochlorite, potassium permanganate, fluoride, polymer, phosphate corrosion inhibitor and more) and UltraViolet Disinfection equipment with 20”-42” exposed flanged Ductile Iron Pipe. This project also involved a new raw water intake and pump station, additions to an existing administrative operations building including masonry construction with hollowcore precast roofing and ancillary work consisting of cast in place basin drain pump station to allow them to better recycle supernatant water, 4”-42” underground Ductile and PVC pipe.

The existing chemical storage and feed systems and raw water pumps were beyond their life expectancy and were within the 100-year flood plain of the adjacent White River. The new intake was constructed with (6) T-screens in the White River with a hydroburst compressed air system. The airburst system, housed in the raw water pump station, periodically sends a burst of air through the screens for cleaning. Vertical turbine pumps, 30” and 36” installed in cans, transport water to the treatment process. Low pressure UV units were selected for design after evaluation of multiple systems and a present worth analysis. Work was completed while the WTF remained in operation.
